PITTSFIELD, MA – The Youth Leadership Program, a program of the Berkshire Chamber of Commerce, is currently accepting applications for the Youth Leadership Class of 2013. Now entering its third year, the Youth Leadership Program seeks to develop young individuals as the next generation of community leaders; preparing them for constructive and responsible involvement in community affairs, while also encouraging serious thought about career pathways in Berkshire County. Applicants must be current high school sophomores, entering their junior year this fall, and all paperwork must be received at the Berkshire Chamber's new Pittsfield offices located at 66 Allen Street by 4:00 PM this Friday, April 27th to be considered.
The Youth Leadership Program begins with a kick-off retreat the weekend of August 17-18. Conducted by professional facilitators, the retreat includes training in all aspects of leadership and problem-solving techniques; and gives participants the opportunity to experience a supervised, simulated college experience. The retreat is followed by nine monthly, 12:30 – 4:30 afternoon sessions focusing on specific topic areas, such as government, economic development, creative economy, education, healthcare, and leadership, among others.
Applicants will be chosen by a Selection Committee comprised of members of the business community based on demonstrated leadership qualities both inside and outside the classroom. A maximum of 30 students will be selected based on the completed application, brief essays and an interview process; a GPA and attendance requirement will also be a component of the selection criteria. Candidates include not only those with leadership potential, but also those with “diamond in the rough” leadership potential. Individuals may or may not have prior experience in leadership roles in their school or community.
The Youth Leadership Program is generously sponsored by the Berkshire Bank Foundation and Greylock Federal Credit Union. For additional information on Youth Leadership or to obtain an application, visit www.berkshirechamber.com/ylp or call the Berkshire Chamber at 413-499-4000, x 126. Applications must be completed in full and received by 4:00 PM on April 27, 2012 to be considered. The Tuition Fee for the program is $100 and individual financial aid is available. Funds are limited and partial tuition assistance is issued based on need.
